METS Annual Speech Contest 2026

The METS English Speech Contest for 2026 was held on Sunday, January 18th. Thank you to everyone who participated this year!
The event was held at the Asahikawa Kokaido which was even bigger than last year! Below is a selection of pictures from the event.

There were a number of changes to the event this year, the biggest being that it wasn't actually a contest. Instead, we thought it would be more fun and less stressful for our students to just enjoy being able to talk about the things they were interested in. Without the stress of being judged, our students could relax a bit more and not worry so much about making mistakes or forgetting their lines. Due to the format change, we also tried to encourage our students to pair-up and try a more natural form of English dialogue! As it was our first year to try this, we only had 2 pairs give it a shot. Both of them did a fantastic job and their short conversations felt really natural! It seemed like they were having more fun than if they were just giving a speech. We hope to see more of this in the coming years as we would like this to be more of a showcase of our student's abilities than an actual contest. Great work, everyone!

2026年度 METS English スピーチコンテストは、1月18日（日）に開催されました。 今年ご参加いただいた皆さま、本当にありがとうございました。 今年は旭川市公会堂で開催し、昨年よりもさらに広い会場で実施することができました。以下は当日の写真の一部をご紹介しています。
また、今年のイベントではいくつかの変更を行いました。中でも最も大きな変更点は、「点数制ではなかった」という点です。 生徒の皆さんには、興味のあることについて楽しく話してもらうことを重視し、審査されるプレッシャーをなくすことで、よりリラックスして発表できるようにしました。評価を気にせずに話せることで、 間違いやセリフ忘れを過度に心配する必要もなくなり、自然な表現が増えたように感じます。 さらに今年は、新しい試みとしてペアでの英語対話にも挑戦してもらいました。初めての試みということもあり、今回は2組のみの参加でしたが、どちらのペアも素晴らしい出来栄えで、短い会話がとても自然に感じられました。 スピーチよりも楽しそうに取り組んでいる様子が印象的でした。 今後も、このイベントを「コンテスト」というより、生徒の皆さんの英語力を披露する場として発展させていきたいと考えています。 参加者の皆さん、本当にお疲れさまでした。素晴らしい発表をありがとうございました。
